CAELYN ROBERTSON

Artist Biography
Caelyn Robertson is a Cape Town-born contemporary artist whose work is rooted in portraiture, storytelling and an instinctive love of colour. Born into a creative family, with a musician father and an artist mother, she was surrounded by the arts from an early age. As a self-taught artist, she has continually experimented with different techniques, with oil becoming her preferred medium.
Women have long been central to Caelyn’s work. Her portraits seek to capture the individual beyond her roles, surroundings or expectations, focusing instead on presence and character. Through expressive colour, confident technique and careful attention to detail, she explores the warmth, strength, beauty and serenity she associates with femininity.
For Caelyn, painting is also a process of personal discovery. Each new work presents an opportunity to explore her abilities more deeply, refine her technique and find new ways of expressing herself. Her paintings are bold and immediately engaging, yet beneath their visual energy lies an interest in quieter moments of emotion and individuality.
This interest in intimate moments has expanded beyond portraiture into her more recent TAPAS Series. Conceived as a “tapas table of moments”, the series consists of intentionally small paintings drawn from lived experiences, memories, personal tastes and seemingly ordinary things that have stayed with her. Like individual bites, each work offers a concentrated fragment of a larger personal story.
Within these works, a cat reading a book, a stubborn rain cloud or a yellow door illuminated by curious light can become as meaningful as a more weighty memory. Each painting carries its own mood and character, while a recurring neon-pink pulse provides a visual thread through the series. Together, they reveal Caelyn’s ability to find narrative and emotional resonance in both the significant and the wonderfully ordinary.
Caelyn has participated in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa and internationally, including exhibitions in Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Her work is held in private collections throughout South Africa, Europe and the United States. As her practice continues to evolve, storytelling remains at its heart - whether through the presence of a woman or a small fragment of everyday life, she invites the viewer to pause, connect and discover something personally meaningful within the work.
Artist Statement
My aim has always been to capture something of the individual rather than define someone by what they do or where they belong. This is particularly true of the women I paint. I want them simply to exist as themselves - without needing to explain or prove their worth.
I believe there is a particular strength in reaching a place where you no longer need validation from others. There is beauty, warmth and serenity in that sense of self, and these are qualities I continually return to in my portraits.
Storytelling also extends into the smaller moments of my life. My TAPAS Series is my table of moments - a visual menu of experiences, tastes, memories and the little things that move me. Each painting is intentionally small, like a single bite: intimate and concentrated.
Some of these moments carry history and emotional weight; others are there simply because they delight me. Together they become a constellation of things that have stayed with me. Every piece has its own glow and quiet mood, connected by a neon-pink pulse that I think of as my heartbeat.
I want people to approach these works in the same way they might approach a table of tapas: sample, savour and discover their own favourites. Linger where you feel a pull. The story may begin with something that belongs to me, but what the viewer discovers within it can become entirely their own.
