Artist Biography

Kobus Walker is a South African contemporary painter born in Rustenburg in 1971 and currently based in Pretoria. He studied Fine Art at Technikon Pretoria, completing his diploma in 1992. After graduating, he worked for almost a decade alongside artist and mentor Tivan van Dyk on projects in South Africa and internationally, an experience that introduced him to large-scale work and broadened his technical approach to painting. He has worked as a full-time artist since 2007.

Growing up on a farm near Rustenburg had a lasting influence on Kobus. The freedom to spend time alone in nature fostered an early fascination with plants, trees, birds and the African landscape. Discovering the work of J.H. Pierneef, who painted the landscapes familiar to him, became particularly significant and helped shape both his visual language and his relationship with the South African environment.

Working primarily in oil on canvas and board, Kobus brings together elements of Pop Art with classical painting techniques and contemporary interpretation. His influences range from Rembrandt, Vermeer and Klimt to Pierneef, Tretchikoff and Andy Warhol. Rather than imitate these diverse traditions, he reinterprets them through his own distinctive language of bold colour, strong outlines, layered detail and an almost animated quality.

Kobus employs traditional techniques such as glazing and chiaroscuro alongside this contemporary visual vocabulary. His paintings are carefully constructed through layers of oil, often working from highlights towards deeper tonal contrasts. The result is a meeting of classical technique and playful contemporary design, creating works that reveal more detail and visual connections the longer they are observed.

Nature remains central to his subject matter. Birds, plants and landscapes recur throughout his work, often carrying narratives around biodiversity and conservation. His interest in interiors and design introduces another dimension, allowing natural forms, decorative elements and unexpected cultural references to coexist within carefully considered compositions.

Kobus has exhibited extensively since the early 1990s and has presented numerous solo exhibitions. His relationship with Art@Africa has become an important part of his artistic development, providing the freedom to build cohesive, narrative-driven bodies of work including Layers of Perception, African Horizon, Natural Delights and Ready, Steady, Grow. His fifth solo exhibition with Art@Africa, Display, is scheduled for October 2026.

Artist Statement

My work brings together Pop Art, classical painting and contemporary interpretation. I am inspired by artists as diverse as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Klimt, Pierneef, Tretchikoff and Warhol, but I take these influences and remould them into my own visual language. I believe that as we grow and change, our art should grow with us.

Nature has always been one of my greatest sources of inspiration. Growing up on a farm gave me the freedom to spend time observing plants, trees, birds and the African landscape. Today these elements continually find their way into my paintings, often carrying a narrative about conservation and the extraordinary diversity of life on our planet.

My painting process combines careful preparation with traditional oil techniques. I build my works through thin layers, strong tonal contrasts and glazes, often using chiaroscuro to create depth and drama. At the same time, bold outlines and colour introduce the more animated, contemporary character that has become part of my style.

I want people to experience both calm and excitement when encountering my work. From a distance, colour, composition and design create the initial impression; closer inspection reveals another world of details and relationships. The closer you look, the more you discover.

For me, painting is an ongoing process of discovery. I do not want to know exactly where my work will be several years from now. New experiences lead to new ideas, and every painting teaches me something. I prefer to allow that journey to unfold naturally - trusting that the process of painting will continue to guide the work towards whatever comes next.
