Artist Biography

Jane Moodie is a Cape Town-born contemporary artist whose work explores the inner world through expressive portraiture. Her creative journey began in childhood with a love of drawing, earning her a distinction in Art at school. Although she did not pursue formal fine art studies, creativity remained central to her life. After travelling extensively, Jane embarked on a 25-year career in fashion design, working locally and internationally before leaving the industry in 2018 to become a full-time artist.

Self-taught, Jane initially worked with commissioned portraits before immersing herself in oil painting during a formative period living in the Karoo. Experimenting with colour, texture and emotion, she gradually developed the distinctive visual language that defines her work today: elegant, soulful portrayals of feminine presence infused with symbolism, beauty and quiet strength.

Working primarily in oil and gold leaf, Jane approaches each painting intuitively. The feminine face becomes a vessel for emotion, with the eyes playing a particularly important role in communicating what lies beneath the surface. Layers of oil and translucent glazes create depth and luminosity, while gold leaf introduces a sense of fragility, sacredness and inner light.

Jane draws inspiration from nature, spiritual growth, the human psyche and the shared symbolism found across cultures. Her work is rooted in an African sensibility while increasingly exploring connections with other cultural traditions. At its heart is an ongoing fascination with our relationship to the earth, to heritage and to the unseen emotional and spiritual connections that bind us.

Her current body of work, Threads of Transcendence, brings expressive feminine portraiture together with the symbolic language of Persian rugs. Intricate pattern becomes a visual thread between cultures and generations, creating a stage upon which the feminine spirit is honoured and remembered. Through these works, Jane explores the quiet yet profound strength passed from one generation to the next.

Jane has been represented by Art@Africa since 2022, presenting her first solo exhibition, Reverence, with the gallery in 2023. She has since participated in The Art of Evolution – Evolution of Art and Departures and Arrivals, and her work is also represented internationally through Atelier Louis Gallery in Belgium, including exhibitions at the Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam and elsewhere in Europe.

Artist Statement

When I paint, it is as if I am meditating. I become completely absorbed in the moment and time seems to disappear. It is in this space that I feel most connected to my creativity and to the emotions I want to express through my work.

I am drawn to the feminine face as a vessel for feeling. The eyes are especially important to me; they can reveal vulnerability, strength, melancholy, tenderness and quiet certainty without the need for words. I am less interested in creating a perfect portrait than in allowing emotion to find its way into form.

My process is intuitive and responsive. I rarely begin with a rigid plan, allowing layers of oil, colour and translucent glazes to develop as the painting evolves. I sometimes scrape areas back or introduce gold leaf when the work calls for a sense of fragility, sacredness or light.

Nature and our connection to it remain constant sources of inspiration, alongside spiritual growth, heritage and the human psyche. In Threads of Transcendence, I combine feminine portraiture with the symbolism and intricate patterns of Persian rugs, exploring the beauty and strength that can be carried through generations and shared across cultures.

Ultimately, I want my work to create a quiet but profound connection. I hope the figure looking back at the viewer becomes a mirror for something within them - perhaps vulnerability, resilience, tenderness or joy - inviting them to pause, look beyond the surface and connect with their own inner world.
