Artist Biography

Fanuel Moiane is a Mozambican-born contemporary artist based in Durban, South Africa. Born in Maputo in 1990, he grew up in a family where artistic expression formed part of everyday life. His late brother, Isaac Sithole, played an important role in his development, introducing him to printmaking in 2008 and sharing the woodcut techniques that would later become central to Fanuel’s artistic practice.

Although Fanuel qualified in auto mechanics, the loss of his brother in 2012 became a turning point in his life. He chose to leave that path behind and commit himself fully to art. From 2013, he developed his practice as a self-taught artist, working primarily in printmaking, woodblock carving and acrylic on canvas.

Woodblock carving has become a defining element of Fanuel’s visual language. Initially working on a smaller scale, he began experimenting with large-scale carved woodblocks in 2019. The physical process of carving allows him to transform thoughts and emotions into tangible forms, creating works in which the material itself becomes part of the story. His work has attracted collectors both locally and internationally.

Nature is one of Fanuel’s greatest sources of inspiration. Following the loss of his mother in 2021, he turned increasingly to his art as a way of processing emotion and change. Water and the diverse life of the ocean offered a particular sense of solace, and the fish emerged as an important recurring symbol within his work.

Through his fish series, Fanuel explores transformation, rebirth, growth and progress. The fish becomes a metaphor for our ability to move through difficult experiences and emerge changed. Carved into wood, these forms give physical expression to an optimistic philosophy: that adversity does not have to define us, but can become a catalyst for personal transformation.

Fanuel’s work has been shown at galleries including KZNSA Art Gallery, Thamasa Arts Gallery and Artvark Gallery. As his practice continues to evolve, he is increasingly drawn to ambitious scale and to developing the symbolic possibilities of woodblock carving. He is currently working towards his first solo exhibition.

Artist Statement

My work is deeply connected to nature and to the experiences that have shaped my life. I use art as a way of giving physical form to thoughts and emotions that can sometimes be difficult to express in words.

Woodblock carving is particularly important to me. There is something powerful about taking a solid piece of wood and gradually transforming it through carving. It allows me to materialise an emotion or idea and turn something internal into something that can be seen and experienced by others.

Water and ocean life have become important sources of inspiration in my work. I find a sense of solace in water, and the fish has become a recurring symbol through which I explore my own experiences of change. For me, it represents rebirth, growth, transformation and progress.

Life inevitably brings loss and adversity, but I believe that the mind is a powerful tool. With positive thought, difficult experiences can become opportunities for growth. My fish series reflects this belief: whatever challenges we encounter, we have the ability to turn the page, transform ourselves and continue moving forward.

Ultimately, I want my work to carry a sense of possibility. Through the physical act of carving and the symbolism found in nature, I hope to remind the viewer that change can be powerful and that even from difficult experiences, something new can emerge.
