EBEN BEUKES

Artist Biography
Eben Beukes is a Cape Town-based contemporary artist known for his highly detailed, hyperrealistic charcoal drawings. Entirely self-taught, his artistic career began unexpectedly in 2018, when he created his first hyperrealistic drawing. His natural ability to capture light, texture and extraordinary detail quickly developed into a distinctive visual language through which he explores both the beauty and complexity of the world around him.
Although Eben had always been creatively inclined, art was not initially a career path he was able to pursue. During his school years, there was little opportunity to develop his practice. A significant turning point came in 2017 when two hip operations left him confined to bed and on crutches for much of the year. The period ultimately created the space from which his artistic journey would emerge.
Working primarily in charcoal, Eben uses the dramatic relationship between light and darkness to give his subjects an almost photographic presence. Photography provides the initial reference, capturing a defined moment in time, but it is only the beginning of the process. Through drawing, that captured instant is transformed into something more imaginative and enduring.
Central to Eben’s work is an exploration of the relationship between humanity and the natural world. He considers both the marks we leave on our environment and the marks the world leaves upon us. Ideas of innocence, ageing, time, human connection and our relationship with the earth recur throughout his work, giving his technical realism a deeper narrative dimension.
For Eben, detail is not simply about reproducing reality. His realism becomes a means of giving vivid life to an idea or concept, creating images that invite the viewer beyond what is immediately visible. A fleeting photographic moment is extended through the painstaking process of drawing, becoming what he describes as a timeless stretch of the imagination.
Underlying Eben’s practice is an enduring sense of wonder and a desire to celebrate life. His drawings encourage us to look more carefully at people, nature and the traces of time that surround us. Through charcoal, light and meticulous observation, he finds beauty in both the extraordinary and the overlooked, reminding us that inspiration can be found everywhere.
Artist Statement
I strive to celebrate life. I am fascinated by the marks the world leaves on people and, in turn, the marks that people leave on the world. These connections between humanity, nature and time continually provide the starting point for my work.
Photography allows me to capture my subject at a particular instant, but I do not want the finished drawing to remain trapped within that moment. Through charcoal, I allow the image to evolve, transforming something fleeting into a more timeless space for imagination.
Light and texture are fundamental to the way I work. Hyperrealism gives me the ability to make an idea feel tangible, but the detail is never intended simply to demonstrate technique. I want the realism to draw the viewer closer and encourage them to discover the thought or story behind the image.
I am inspired by the innocence of new life, the extraordinary architecture created by time, our connection to the earth and the connections we form with one another. I find beauty in the traces left by experience and in the constant interaction between people and the environment.
Ultimately, I want my work to take a moment that might otherwise disappear and give it a longer life. There is beauty in everything. Inspiration is everywhere.
