Art@Africa, nestled in Cape Town’s iconic V&A Waterfront, is more than just a gallery—it’s a living, breathing platform for the voices of contemporary South African artists. At the heart of this vision are its founders: Dirk Durnez and Katlijn Pynket, a couple whose journey is marked by a deep love for art, cultural connection, and human empowerment.
A Foundation Built on Purpose
Belgian-born Dirk Durnez brings to Art@Africa a rich tapestry of experience. With over 35 years of international expertise in diplomacy, economic development, and trade—serving notably as Belgium’s Advisor for Economic Diplomacy and founding member of the Cape Chamber of Commerce—Dirk approaches the art world not only with a curator’s eye but also a connector’s instinct. His understanding of global contexts and local needs allows Art@Africa to function as a bridge: between emerging artists and global audiences, between vision and opportunity.
His wife, Katlijn Pynket, has been equally instrumental in building and nurturing the space. Though often behind the scenes, her presence shapes the gallery’s warm, inclusive atmosphere and commitment to showcasing work that is deeply meaningful, emotionally resonant, and socially engaged.
Together, Dirk and Katlijn made a bold choice: to remain independent and self-funded. This freedom allows them to support artists not just in words, but with tangible resources—providing space, exposure, and mentorship without the burden of commercial conformity. As Dirk puts it, “Our independence allows us to focus on the positive.”
Art as Agent for Change
At the core of Art@Africa is a belief that art is not a luxury, but a powerful force for transformation. Dirk often refers to artists as “agents for change”—individuals who channel the complexities of their lives and environments into visual language that speaks to us all. Under his leadership, the gallery doesn’t merely sell art; it nurtures voices, tells stories, and sparks conversations about identity, belonging, healing, and hope.
The couple’s Belgian roots and South African commitment give the gallery its unique character: global in perspective, yet grounded in the pulse of contemporary South Africa. It is this duality—of elegance and accessibility, of personal care and professional excellence—that continues to draw artists and audiences alike.
A Legacy in the Making
As Art@Africa grows, so too does its impact. Under Dirk and Katlijn’s guidance, the gallery continues to evolve as a dynamic cultural space—one that celebrates diversity, encourages dialogue, and most importantly, gives artists room to be heard.
Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious visitor, stepping into Art@Africa means stepping into a vision carefully, lovingly built by two people who believe in the power of art to transform the world, one brushstroke at a time.
