I TAKi MOKOKA specializes in Pop Art, Art Toys, and “Niche Sculptures”.
A lot of my work is inspired mass media, social climate and urban culture, with a dark twist. I produce work that seems very literal, straight to the point. But with undertones of black consciousness , relaying messages of identity (lack off) , how whatever I’m going through as a black African artist is systematically designed. Trying to find my voice, as an African artist in the international art industry and being fully aware how Western and Eastern cultures have played a roll in my ideology, how I see and produce art. Merging the east, west, with my south, my blackness, I a South African Tswana male. Finding myself through acknowledging that I lost myself. Its an ongoing process.
I predominately work with recycled material, when it comes to the creation of my art toys and niche sculptures . More so urban waste and your everyday household waste. That plays their idea of creating Pop Art through popular culture and mass media and production, in very small limited editions. That is to connect the figurines, sculptures I create with the everyday household products with the everyday human. But I’m a big experimenting and enjoy dabbling in other mediums and techniques.
I also work with/on traditional mediums, painting, sketching, photography, collages. These were my mediums of choice, in my earlier career.
